Neurological Physiotherapy
Ocean Physio & Rehab’s Specialist Neurological Physiotherapist has experience treating a wide range of neurological conditions such as Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple sclerosis, Head Injury, Spinal Cord Injury and Guillan Barre and Cerebellar Ataxia.
These conditions can leave specific deficits in the arms, legs and trunk. These include weakness or stiffness in the muscles, tremor, problems with coordinating movements and also changes in sensation. Neurological physiotherapy can help clients with neurological deficits that affect their movement. Treatment depends on your specific problems but can help by:
- Optimising the movement in the affected side of your body
- Strengthening muscles that have become weak.
- Maintaining or increasing the range of movement in stiffened joints.
- Improving mobility, balance and activities of daily living through practise and individually tailored exercise programmes.
- Advice regarding positions and exercises that will help to prevent deterioration or worsening of some conditions.
An initial assessment will consist of a full physical assessment, a full past medical history and an idea of your current problems. Individual treatment plans and goals will be discussed after this assessment, the amount of physiotherapy and the frequency of treatments will depend on your needs.
The private consultation rooms and treatment area are fully accessible to wheelchair users. Please note that the large gym areas are accessible via stairs only. Please visit the facilities page on the website for further information.
Our Specialist Physiotherapist will also provide assessments and treatment in your own home. This service is often used by patients who have difficulty getting to the clinic. It may also be useful if you are experiencing particular difficulties with activities of daily living such as getting up and down from a chair or walking inside and outside of your home. This is also a good opportunity to work alongside carers who may be able to assist you with exercises or positioning that will benefit your specific needs.
